Course Descriptions & Expectations
7th Math Course Description: The 7th-grade math course will focus on number sense and introductory pre-algebra skills. Students will review computations skills of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals and expands those skills with negatives. Students will begin basic solving skills with 1-step and 2-step equations as well as proportions. A study of geometry concepts will connect computation skills, equations, and basic geometry vocabulary. Introductory probability scenarios along with measures of data and data representations will be included. Problem-solving is reinforced throughout the year
7th Pre-Algebra Course Description: The focus of the course is on properties of numbers, number sense, computation, and the use of variables to connect number sense to Algebra. Expressions and equations will be strongly emphasized throughout the year. These algebraic skills will be used in introductory geometry concepts such as angle relationships, polygons, scale factors, surface area, volume, and the Pythagorean theorem. Probability scenarios along with measures of data and data representations will be included. Problem-solving is reinforced throughout the year and students will be introduced to linear functions as a bridge to Algebra.
7th Science Course Description: The 7th-grade science course will focus on physical science. Priorities include an understanding of properties and physical/chemical processes, the transformation of energy, and how forces and motion affect the movement of matter. Students will use scientific problem solving throughout the year while engaging in hands-on labs, identifying variables, making predictions, and collecting/comparing data.
7th ELA Course Description: English Language Arts is a blocked class of Reading and English. The two courses will focus on strengthening and improving reading and writing skills. In Reading, students will work on developing vocabulary, comprehension, and analysis skills using short stories, nonfiction articles, and class novels. In English, students will concentrate on parts of speech, grammar, and mechanics of writing. Throughout the year, students will construct a research paper, an argumentative essay, a reciprocal communication podcast, and write various forms of poetry.
7th Social Studies Course Description: This two semester course introduces world history from the earliest civilizations to the Middle Ages. Students will analyze the impact of historical events and how ancient cultures continue to influence the modern world. Students will also discover the ways that humans have utilized and adapted to their physical environment. Over the course of the school year, students will use primary and secondary sources to research Egyptian, Greek and Roman topics and make present projects to the class.
